I Love America!

We had a busy and fun filled July 4th weekend.  Sandra and I arrived on Thursday evening and we came home Monday afternoon.  All eight of our grandchildren were in attendance plus Sandra, Katie, and Matt.  Here is what took place:

  • Golfing on the cabin course after closing time.
  • Playing in the sprinklers and in buckets of water.
  • Gus made a friend from the cabin next door which meant the boys could go down their slide over and over and over--except Rhett who just liked watching because it was "too high".
  • Gus went golf ball hunting with the neighbors (I think he preferred them over us) and the next night continued on his own by running out on the course and "finding" balls--which unfortunately were still being played by the owners.
  • We played LOTS of card games: Crazy Eights, Gin, Mormon Bridge, Spades, Rummy, Uno, and we tried to play Go Fish with the little boys but they couldn't help revealing what they had in their hands and they only had a 10 minute attention span--tops. They thought it was especially funny instead of saying, "Go fish," to say, "Go jump in the lake" OR "Go swim in the ocean" or some such nonsense.
  • Lots of rides in the golf cart--to the park, to the pond, and around the course.
  • Had our names added to the wait list at the swimming pool. When the call finally came, it was a frantic rush to get ready and packed and over to the pool. We got to enjoy at least an hour and a half of swim time.
  • Watched a lovely fireworks show in Thayne, WY. We had close seats and Dax took credit for the whole show; even Wesley stayed awake for it.
  • Speaking of Wesley, the mountain air seemed to agree with him in the sleep department. Katie was shocked at how soundly he slept while there.
  • Had beautiful weather the whole time, lots of good food to eat (and no Kash, there are not real turtles in turtle cake), and enjoyed making new memories at the cabin.I picked up these two in Idaho Falls from Missy.  Can you see how excited they are to be going to the cabin.

Wesley has graduated to the outdoor swing.  Swinging was another constant activity.  Luckily, there were plenty of 'pushers'.
Even Wes enjoyed the card games.
The first day, Sandra uncovered this nest in the bushes out front.  The first day there were three eggs. I think Gus may have pointed at an egg and accidentally touched it because the next day there were only two.  The day after that there were three again, and the next day FOUR!  I tried to get a picture of the mother bird, but she was too fast for me.  She looked like this:

I came home and started cleaning out the office closet which was/is still a huge job.  Of course I have to look at all the things I find in there: my senior class high school annual, old pictures, two letters my dad wrote to me when I went to girl's camp, Jerry's memoir compiled by Sandra, the book I had for the twin's baby shower, old journals I had written. Cleaning a closet should not be such an emotional experience, but it has been. This is from the letter my dad wrote to me: "Where ever she goes and whatever she does there will be a touch of Karla's very own radiance." (I'm choking up again!); then, the twin's book had entries from dear ones who are no longer with us: Grandma Y, Grandma Hedin, and Aunt Fern, and from one of the journals I found this entry that reminds me of what loving grandparents my kids have grown up with: April 11, 2005 (the day after Katie participated in the SR Jr. Miss Pageant) "On Sunday she didn't feel so great--she coughed all day Saturday but I think adrenaline was keeping her going. She slept most of the day and had a fever. I went to church alone (Quinn spoke in another ward) and then we had our parents for dinner of barbeques. Katie slept through dinner, but both grandmas gave her $300.00! Neither one knew the other one had and they both did it quietly. Sandra made a certificate that said 'Best All Around' and scholarship for $300. What great grandmas she has!"
Some of the fun pictures I came across.
Thursday I went with Jeanne Cannon to lunch at Homestead.  It was the first time meeting up with a friend since 2020 started and we had a lot of catching up to do.  That evening, I got a call from Kim who was in Blackfoot and wanted to meet for dinner.  We had 10 minutes before we drove to Tommy Vaughns.  Once again, we got to catch up.  No contact for months and then two invites in the same day.
Snoopy still lives!
We got a text on Friday morning that Elder Belnap from our mission was traveling past Blackfoot with three friends and wanted to stop for a visit.  We ordered pizza and I made chocolate chip cookies.  It was fun to catch up with Elder Belnap and meet his friends, but we somehow missed getting a picture.  The Murdocks come that night for a visit. We played Scrabble (not to brag, but I won) and Dax and Rhett enjoyed playing house with the big box the new washing machine came in.
Saturday was golf day with Sandra and then lunch at Wendy’s, and Sunday after dinner, we headed to the cabin once again. This time we golfed, ate at Yankee Doodles in Alpine, watched lots of episodes of The Rockford Files, and Sandra and I put together a puzzle. Things were much quieter this time.
I tried to get a picture of the beautiful yellow canola fields on the way to the cabin.  Had to do my best through the moving window because someone wouldn't stop.
Spent Tuesday night and Wednesday morning canning cherries.  My job is to pit them.
Made Peachy a new summery table topper since I packed away her Christmas ones.
Thought this was humorous--especially since no one was hurt in the rock slide near Riggins, Idaho.
